Make your own. How to make a test batch
An introduction to Biodiesel:
Without a shadow of a doubt, the world is currently facing one of its greatest crises, which if not urgently and expertly dealt with, can bring the global economy to a complete halt. The dual problem of energy crisis and global warming will badly hurt both developing and developed nations of the world if a viable solution is not found soon enough. We can see the energy crisis taking a toll on our lives and pockets even as this article is being written. The gasoline prices have increased by several notches in the United States in the last couple of years. While any decrease which happens once in a beautiful blue moon in limited to a measly few pennies, any global disaster increases oil prices literally by dollars. Remember how oil prices soared immediately after the Hurricane Katrina. Prices never really came down even after the crisis was long over. Crisis like these have prompted several research companies and private entrepreneurs find fuel alternatives which would ease the pressure on traditional gasoline and diesel, and also go long way in reducing pollution as bio-fuels are much cleaner than fossil fuels and lesser emissions.
Biodiesel – what is it?
Basically Biodiesel, is the name that has been given to an alternative fuel made from vegetable oil. It’s a perfect alternative to traditional gasoline. Animal fat and vegetable oil go through a specific process called "transesterification" which turns it into Esterified oil. Esterified oil can then be sued to power unmodified diesel engines. This Biodiesel can also be used to treat regular diesel if desired.
What is so amazing about this technology is that any type of animal fat or vegetable oil can be used to make biodiesel. However, rapeseed or soybean oil is most commonly used to make this alternative fuel.
Why is biodiesel such a great alternative to ordinary fuel?
What makes biodiesel such a great alternative is its versatility. It can be made in any part of the world from local recourses. These local recourses can be cheaply grown and are excellent for the environment. Biodiesel produces much lesser emissions than normal fuel thereby making it so much safer for the environment. Even if there is an oil spill, the amount of harm will be negligible as compared to an oil spill from a normal source.
The Government rising to the call
As the world wakes up to the profound advantages of biodiesel, governments of several countries are eagerly jumping the bandwagon to increase the production of this excellent source of clean energy. In USA, the IRS has started offering tax incentives to institutions and individuals that produce and use biodiesel. The government is desperately trying to reduce fuel emissions that are choking the life of the environment by giving financial aid and other incentives to producers of biodiesel fuel. A number of enlightened millionaires in the US are supporting the cause of biodeisel. Its not as if they are doing so, just for the sake of protecting the environment but they are also trying hard to reduce their manufacturing expenses, a large part of which is spent in procuring petroleum.
It’s important that we all wake up to the benefits of bio fuel and learn to make it a part of our lives. This is something that we owe to our future generations.
